Routes of migrating soaring birds
Soaring migrants travelling through Israel use three principal routes which are used in the opposite directions during the spring and autumn: (1) the Western Route lies mainly along the western edge of the central mountain range, ( 2 ) the Eastern Route lies mainly along the Jordan Valley, crossing the mountain range during part of the day, continuing southward along the Dead Sea towards the Si...
متن کاملMigrating Birds and Tickborne Encephalitis Virus
During spring and autumn 2001, we screened 13,260 migrating birds at Ottenby Bird Observatory, Sweden, and found 3.4% were infested with ticks. Four birds, each a different passerine species, carried tickborne encephalitis virus (TBEV)-infected ticks (Ixodes ricinus). Migrating birds may play a role in the geographic dispersal of TBEV-infected ticks.
متن کاملSpeeds and wingbeat frequencies of migrating birds
Hedenström and Alerstam (Hedenström and Alerstam, 1995) argued that different optimal air speeds can be identified for a migrating bird depending on whether the ‘currency’ that the bird is trying to maximise is distance per unit fuel energy used, average speed over one or several flight stages and stopovers, or various other possibilities. On the other hand, Alerstam and Hedenström (Alerstam an...
متن کاملDetours and Gromov hyperbolicity
The notion of Gromov hyperbolicity was introduced by Gromov in the setting of geometric group theory [G1], [G2], but has played an increasing role in analysis on general metric spaces [BHK], [BS], [BBo], [BBu], and extendability of Lipschitz mappings [L]. In this theory, it is often additionally assumed that the hyperbolic metric space is proper and geodesic (meaning that closed balls are compa...
متن کاملBat predation on nocturnally migrating birds.
Bat predation on birds is a very rare phenomenon in nature. Most documented reports of bird-eating bats refer to tropical bats that occasionally capture resting birds. Millions of small birds concentrate and cross over the world's temperate regions during migration, mainly at night, but no nocturnal predators are known to benefit from this enormous food resource. An analysis of 14,000 fecal pel...
